In recent years, South Africa has witnessed a steady increase in electricity prices, driven by factors like inflation and supply struggling to meet demand. This trend has placed immense financial strain on households, particularly low-income families, who are already grappling to make ends meet. As electricity is a fundamental necessity for daily life, the inability to afford electricity bills can lead to dire consequences, including energy poverty and a diminished quality of life. Trevor further points out, "If you have electricity growing by 12.74% and the wage increases of workers growing only by about 4.7% and below that, it means therefore that the wages of workers are not keeping up to speed with the rising cost of electricity."
The recent electricity increases include a 12.72% rise in local authority tariffs from July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025, and a 12.74% increase in all tariff charges for Eskom direct customers from April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025. Additionally, the affordability subsidy charge sees a substantial increase of 25.24%. Building upon last year's 18.65% increase, the recent hike from Eskom signifies a cumulative rise of 33.8% in tariffs over the span of two years.
Renewable energy, with government support, emerges as a viable solution to address South Africa's energy affordability and accessibility issues.
